Izumi Tanaka is a normal teenager finishing up her last year of high school in Mount Shasta, a small town in Northern California. She lives with her mom and her beloved dog, Tamagotchi. She doesn’t know much about her dad until she and her best friend, Noora, come across his name in a letter he wrote to Izumi’s mother. Turns out, her dad is nothing short of being the Crown Prince of Japan. This also means Izumi is a real life princess. Wanting to know more about her roots and her dad, Izumi travels to Japan to seek answers and learn. Izumi soon realizes that this won’t be an easy trip. She has to deal with dresses, the press, meeting her family members, and trying to keep up with the customs that are quite literally foreign to her. With the company of Stephanie and Ester, her two closest friends, summer vacation has never looked brighter. However, she soon learns her summer isn't going to go according to plan, not completely anyway. Lulu's mom tells her that their next door neighbor, who was also Lulu's childhood best friend, is coming home for the summer. Only he isn't just a childhood friend. He's now a K-pop idol with tons of fans. He goes by the stage name Kite and Lulu hasn't seen him since he debuted with his group, Karnival. Lulu wants them to be friends again, but it isn't easy. It gets even harder when Lulu starts to question what kind of feelings she has for Kite. Even if she does have romantic feelings for him, could they ever work together?

Long Story Short by Serena Kaylor Genre: Realistic Fiction; Romance Reviewed by Julia W., 9th Grade Rating: 7/10 Long Story Short is Serena Kaylor's debut novel, and for a first book I think she did an exceptional job! If theater, romance and fun is your thing I would definitely check this novel out! Beatrice Quinn has been homeschooled her whole life and never has never had any real friends. When she is accepted into Oxford, her parents aren't sure they should let her go. She's only sixteen after all, and they don't think Beatrice is ready for the socializing it will entail. Her parents decide to make Beatrice an offer: if she can spend the whole summer at the Connecticut Shakespeare Summer Academy and complete a list of tasks, Beatrice can go to Oxford. If she fails, she will have to wait at least another year.
