The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah Genre: Historical Fiction; Adult Fiction Reviewed by Paige M., 12th Grade Rating: 10/10 The Nightingale is a historical fiction that takes place in France during World War II. The story goes back and forth between two protagonists: sisters learning how to survive when the Nazis took over France. The eldest sister Viann Maruric has a husband and a young daughter. When she got the news her husband was being sent to war she was crushed. When youngest sister Isabelle Rossignol first found out about the war, she was overcome with a feeling of helplessness. She knew that she needed to help France in this time when everyone was living in fear. If things could not get worse for the family, a Nazi soldier forcibly moved into their house. Problems arise when Viann's main focus is to take care of her family, while Isabelle is inviting trouble into her life trying to stop the Nazi party. As s...

Optimists Die First

Optimists Die First by Susin Nielsen Genre: Realistic Fiction Reviewed by Evan S., 10th Grade Rating: 8/10 This novel is one that just from a glance, wouldn't look like my kind of book. The genre of dramatic realistic fiction isn't really my preferred read, but this book was truly a good pick, and I hope you'll enjoy it too! This novel follows a very careful pessimist named Petula. Petula's life is full of constant worry and anxiety. Petula grows her fear off of a tragic accident from her youth, where a button choked her baby sister to death. Worst of all, she completely blames herself for the accident and refuses to move on.

In an Instant

In an Instant by Suzanne Redfearn Genre: Drama; Thriller; Psychological; Adult Fiction Reviewed by Paige M., 12th Grade Rating: 9/10 In an Instant follows the story of a sixteen-year-old girl named Fin Miller, who dies when her RV goes over a mountain. She becomes a ghost and watches her family and friends' grief over the life altering crash. They all experience extreme loss and injuries that will forever be a reminder of the day they were on a snowy road, just about to grab food. No one really knows how one would react in a life or death situation. But what if some people's actions disappoint and maybe put everyone else in danger? Written in a third person point of view told by the sixteen-year-old ghost, this book shares a unique perspective to an extreme situation. This book was a quick read that I think can get anyone out of a reading slump. I think that this is such a unique book that if one is sick of reading the same t...
