*Editor's Note: Two of our volunteer writers submitted separate reviews for The Hate U Give within a few days of each other. Rather than making two posts for two positive reviews of the same book, we've decided to combine their reviews into one entry for Teen Reads. Their reviews are posted in the order they were submitted to the Library. Enjoy!

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is one of my favorite books after reading it! I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a good story that pulls you in and keeps you interested!

The Hate U Give is about a girl named Starr, who fights for the justice of her good friend, Khalil after he is unjustly killed by a cop. Even though Starr has an amazing family and overall upbringing, there have been things that she has gone through that have made a huge impact on how she is to this day, like sadly witnessing the death of her best friend when she was just 10 years old. She is only 16 and has now witnessed death two different times in her life. She goes through tough situations with her friends, family, and school because of the injustice that has happened. This story goes into great detail about differences in races, cultures, and the economic differences between her hometown and the school that she goes to, showing how these differences impact people's lives. The messages that are given in this book are so powerful and meaningful, and will really impact how the reader thinks and feels after reading it.

This book is high in emotions and goes into such amazing detail that I could really feel how the characters were feeling. I loved every part of this book and I was never bored while reading it. I believe that this book deserves a 9/10. While I was never bored of this book, I do think that there were some pages and language that didn’t exactly need to be included to prove the point that was made. There was at least one part of the story that dragged on a bit but even then once I got through that area the book picked back up and continued to be interesting. I believe that the reason there were areas that dragged on was to show how long of a process it can be to gain justice for someone so I understand why the author did this.

So if you like a captivating and a book with a deep meaning, this book would be perfect for you and I definitely recommend reading this! There are so many important lessons taught through this book, and it really makes an impact on how the reader will look at things after reading it.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is one of those books that will stay with you forever. I remember looking at the cover and thinking that maybe I wouldn’t like it, but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. After reading the summary, I wanted to give it a chance and see what it was about.

“The Hate U Give” is about a teenage girl named Starr Carter trying to find her way between her impoverished neighborhood and the predominantly white, affluent private school she attends. The story starts after Starr witnesses the police shooting of her childhood friend, Khalil on their way home. Haunted by the memories created by the death of Khalili, Starr starts a journey to get justice for her best friend. Even though it is a tough one, she still continues to persist.

This book is a book with many layers that tells about injustice, prejudice and racism, but most of all it is a book about love and unity. It has characters that you can relate to and scenarios that are seen too often. I loved the way this book portrays this because it shows people the reality of the world. The way the author made the description more vivid made it an easy and “enjoyable” read. If given the chance, I would definitely recommend that people read this book.
